When Brandon Flowers announced his solo project in April, many speculated about what sound would emerge from the Killers lead singer's album. However, "Crossfire," the first single from his upcoming release "Flamingo," doesn't reveal any particular surprises. Flowers simply follows the pop direction that his band has taken of late, especially on its third album, 2008's "Day & Age." Over echoing guitars and a Keane-like piano track, Flowers sings with melodramatic flair about getting through tough times with the help of a lover: "Tell the devil that he can go back from where he came/ His fire he airs all through their beating vein/And when the hardest part is over, we'll be here." Flowers may sound a little too eager to assign an epic quality to his first effort as a solo artist, but "Crossfire" still hints at a promising direction for "Flamingo."
