In 2002, when he was promoting his first album "Back Porch Spirituals," Jeremy Fisher literally biked across North America, from Seattle to Halifax. On a $60 budget, the Canadian singer/songwriter spent dozens of hours crafting a homemade animated video for his recent single "Cigarette" himself. He went to college for music and applies concepts like 18th century bass/lead counterpoint to his songs.

You wouldn't guess it, listening to his sweet folk- and rock-inflected pop tunes, but Fisher is a man capable of some massive extremes.

"I like staying active, I'm a pretty busy person," Fisher tells Billboard.com. "I can't really be taking those kind of bike trips anymore, sadly."

The 30-year-old pianist and guitarist has his hands full this fall, touring with the Weakerthans and Xavier Rudd and supporting his new effort "Goodbye Blue Monday," released September 18 via Wind-Up.

It was his first set for the label, which is coincidentally distributed by Fisher's former label, Sony. He left the major label after the release of his 2005 album "Let It Shine." "I just wasn't enjoying myself, I didn't feel like I could be myself," he says of the departure. "All the A&R people I worked with would be gone a couple months later, it was a big revolving door. I went with Wind-Up because they're such a powerful, creative indie voice."

Things have worked in Fisher's favor, however. "Cigarette" has blown up online due to the popularity of Fisher's video, scoring over 2 million views on YouTube; he was recently interviewed on CNN, talking about his do-it-yourself approach. His music will also be featured in forthcoming Eva Longoria comedy "Over My Dead Body."
