Groove Armada

Groove Armada, "Black Light" (Om)
Release Date: March 2, 2010

Groove Armada's Andy Cato says that MGMT was a big influence on the band's sixth album, "Black Light," but he couldn't get away with saying otherwise. Album standout "Paper Romance" could have fit right in on MGMT's "Oracular Spectacular." But then again, it's not as if Armada can't lay claim to certain elements of that sound-what Cato calls "that Brooklyn thing; rock'n'roll made by people who grew up in nightclubs." Armada first burst onto the U.S. scene with the booty-shaking "I See You" during the height of the big beat era in 1999, and the duo now hosts the Lovebox event series, which has boasted headliners like N*E*R*D and Goldfrapp. Now free from all prior obligations-including one of the first brand-based 360 deals with Bacardi and a nearly decade-long Jive contract-Groove Armada is putting out "Black Light" on San Francisco-based indie Om. "People who were really feeling it, we just worked with them," Cato says of the label selection process. "You can't put a price on raw enthusiasm."
