Exclusive: Watch Ice-T Discuss His 'Art of Rap' Documentary

by Jason Lipshutz, N.Y.  |   January 19, 2012 12:00 EST

Hip-hop will invade Sundance this weekend when "Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap," a new documentary co-directed by Ice-T, is screened at the annual film festival. Before its premiere, Billboard caught up with Ice-T to discuss his first directing effort, and why the film offers a never-before-seen perspective on hip-hop.

"I was looking at the terrain of hip-hop and where it's going… A lot of the kids don't even know where it started, and I said, 'I wanna go and document the craft -- not the money, not the cars, not the girls, the craft,'" says Ice-T. The rapper/actor spoke with MCs like Immortal Technique, Raekwon and Chuck D about their lyrical styles and the cultural importance of hip-hop music.

To celebrate the unveiling of "Something From Nothing," Ice-T will perform with Chuck D and Grandmaster Caz at the Sundance Institute's annual Celebration of Music in Film on Jan. 21.
