With its turn at the slightly shaky, slightly accented brand of British pop rock, Brighton, England's British Sea Power holds its own alongside acts like Interpol and Muse with "Open Season."
The band's second Rough Trade Records effort debuts this week at No. 32 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums and No. 38 on the Top Heatseekers list.
Often compared to Joy Division, which the band cites as an influence, British Sea Power stands out among the recent influx of similar sounds. In a review of the CD, Billboard's Wayne Robins calls the new CD "more structured and disciplined" than its 2003 debut, and "alternately literate and visceral, exuberant and melancholy and undeniably of the British Isles."
The quintet formed in 2001 with brothers Hamilton (bass and vocals) and Yan (guitar and vocals). Adding schoolmate Wood on drums and Noble as a second guitarist, they began hosting Club Sea Power night in Brighton, drawing local attention and eventually catching the ear of a Rough Trade executive. The group's first single, "Remember Me," was released the same year.
Eamon was added on keyboard and percussions in 2003 to round out the group and kick off a monumental year. The next 12 months saw British Sea Power release its first full-length disc, "The Decline of British Sea Power and tour with the Flaming Lips, Interpol, the Killers and the Strokes.
In 2004, the group returned to the studio with noted producer Bill Price, who as worked with the Clash and the Sex Pistols, and more recently the Libertines.
British Sea Power recently announced they would be playing a concert on an unused oil rig in the English Channel; appropriate for a group whose latest opens with the song "It Ended On an Oily Stage."
The band is set for a U.S. tour that will open April 27 in Seattle and include a May 1 appearance at the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio, Calif.
"Please Stand Up," the second single from "Open Season," is set for a May 23 release in the United Kingdom on CD, enhanced CD and 7" vinyl, with unreleased songs as B-sides.
