At the stroke of midnight on January 1, revelers around the world wearing ridiculous hats will join arms with their loved ones and try to sing "Auld Lang Syne." We say "try" because, despite the fact that the Scottish song was composed more than 200 years ago, no one really seems to know the words. (Which makes sense, as most of us only attempt to sing it only once a year, in intoxicated states where remembering our own names is enough of a challenge.)

In an effort to start 2011 off on the right notes, we've assembled videos of a few artists who do know the words to the song, and sing them well. Check out five of our favorite "Auld Lang Syne" performances, and listen as Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand and more wish you a happy new year!

Should old acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind

Should old acquaintance be forgot, in days of auld lang syne

For auld lang syne, my dear, for auld lang syne

We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet, in days of auld lang syne.

Mariah Carey (2010) -- The diva starts off the way mom and dad remember it, but then quickly takes us to the club.

Aretha Franklin & Billy Preston (1987) -- The Queen of Soul and the "Fifth Beatle" give the tune a soulful twist.

Barbra Streisand (2000) -- Babs reinterprets the song and leads a duet with 13,000 fans.

The Beach Boys (From the 1983 album "Beach Boys Rarities") -- Brian Wilson & the Boys flesh out the simple tune with their distinctive, dizzying harmonies.

Jimi Hendrix (1970) -- The guitar god proves you don't even need lyrics to ring in the new year right.
