1000 No. 1s Video Series Day 29:
Richard Marx Talks About Topping the Hot 100

2011 was the year that Billboard celebrated the 1000th No. 1 song on the Hot 100. As we look back on this year in music, we're celebrating that milestone with a month-long series of videos --- one for each day of December -- chatting with 31 of the hitmakers who rocketed to the top of the chart since its inception in 1958. SEE THE FULL CHART HERE.

On day 29 of our 1,000 Hot No. 1s video series, we move on from yesterday's millennial Enrique Iglesias pop hits "Bailamos" and "Be With You," and rewind to a trio of '80s charttoppers as we chat with Richard Marx about his No. 1s, "Hold On To The Nights," "Right Here Waiting" and "Satisfied." "My grandfather, who has now passed away, came out to visit me on the road. He was with me when they gave me the news," Marx says of hearing that "Hold On" reached No. 1 on July 23, 1988. "I was just about to go on stage. . . So I got to announce it to the crowd I was playing for and share that moment with my grandfather."

"I just write songs that I'm proud of, that I like, that I want people to hear. I've never had the experience of either phoning it in or thinking, 'Ooh I've got a smash here,'" Marx explains. But "Hold On To The Nights" was far from his only trip to the top. He returned to No. 1 on the Hot 100 with "Satisfied" on June 24, 1989. And "Right Here Waiting For You" spent three weeks at No. 1 beginning Aug. 12, 1989.

Be sure to come back tomorrow (Dec. 28) for the next 1000 No. 1s video: Boyz II Men talks about their four No. 1s, including "End Of The Road" and "I'll Make Love To You."
