Duran Duran Talks About Topping the Hot 100
2011 was the year that Billboard celebrated the 1000th No. 1 song on the Hot 100. As we look back on this year in music, we're celebrating that milestone with a month-long series of videos --- one for each day of December -- chatting with 31 of the hitmakers who rocketed to the top of the chart since its inception in 1958. On day 19 of our 1,000 Hot No. 1s video series, we move from yesterday's 2011 surprise hit -- "Like A G6" by Far East Movement featuring Dev -- to stylish Big '80s rock as we chat with Duran Duran's Simon LeBon and Nick Rhodes about their double No. 1's, "The Reflex" and "A View To A Kill." "What really kicked 'The Reflex' into the stratosphere was the Nile Rodgers remix of it," singer LeBon says of the hit that topped the Hot 100 on June 23, 1984. "He did a really magnificent job of it."
"A View To A Kill" had another famous man -- this one fictional -- helping nudge it to prominence. "When you're a kid growing up in the U.K., James Bond becomes a part of your life, a glamourous part of your life." Rhodes says of the band's title theme to the Bond film "A View To A Kill," which hit the top on July 13, 1985. "It's the only James Bond theme to have ever been No. 1. . . I was completely shocked." This second of Duran Duran's No. 1s, both of which remained at the top for two weeks, took the pinnacle away from "Sussudio" by Phil Collins; while "Reflex" replaced "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper at the top.
