Hot Tours: Springsteen, U2, Metallica

Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen tops the Hot Tours rankings this week with totals from his five concerts at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. grossing $22.5 million in ticket sales. The shows were the final concerts to be held at the stadium, scheduled to be demolished next year after the opening of the new Meadowlands Stadium currently being constructed beside it. Home to the NFL's New York Giants and New York Jets, Giants Stadium has hosted Springsteen tours four times over the years. The "Born in the U.S.A. Tour" played six shows in 1985 and "The Rising Tour," which included an astounding 10 sellouts, took the field the summer of 2003.  Last year's "Magic Tour" also stopped at the stadium for three sold out shows. As an ode to his hometown's stadium, Springsteen opened each show with "Wrecking Ball," a new tune he penned to honor the venue.

Two more U2 concerts have been reported by promoter Live Nation as the "360 Tour" nears the end of its 2009 North American leg. With sellouts at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium and the new Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas the overall gross for the tour is now at $276 million.

Veteran heavy metal band Metallica is currently on the road in the second North American leg of their "World Magnetic Tour" which began in October of last year. Eight sold out shows from the tour were reported during the most recent tracking including a sellout at Target Center in Minneapolis promoted by Chicago-based Jam Productions. Promoter Frank Productions located in Madison, Wis., reported five Metallica shows from markets in Florida, Ohio, Georgia and Virginia. Live Nation handled the band's shows in San Antonio and Dallas.
