Jenni Rivera & Gerardo Ortiz Among Billboard Mexican Music Awards Performers

A stunning roster of Mexican stars -- including diva Jenni Rivera, leading finalists Gerardo Ortiz and Larry Hernandez, Julión Alvarez y su Nortño Banda, and iconic group Intocable -- are the first group of artists announced as performers for the first-ever Billboard Mexican Music Awards, produced by Telemundo and presented by State Farm.

Norteño icons Los Tucanes de Tijuana, legendary singer Paquita la del Barrio and multi-faceted diva Jenni Rivera will be honored by Billboard and Telemundo with special awards during the inaugural Premios Billboard de la Música Mexicana ( Billboard Mexican Music Awards). The award show, presented by State Farm, will be broadcast on the Telemundo network Oct. 27, marking the first time a major U.S. network produces and broadcasts an award show devoted to regional Mexican music, the top-selling genre of Latin music in the country.

Finalists and winners of Billboard's first Premios Billboard de la Música Mexicana are, like all Billboard awards, determined by chart performance on Billboard's regional Mexican charts as chronicled in Billboard Magazine and on billboard.com from Aug. 28, 2010 through August 20, 2011. But special award recipients are selected by Billboard for singular achievements that go beyond the charts.

Billboard Mexican Music Awards Finalist List

Los Tucanes de Tijuana will be awarded the "Premio Legado Musical," in recognition of a lengthy and rich musical trajectory that has influenced the genre and its artists. Paquita la del Barrio will be bestowed the "La Voz" Award, given to an artist with a distinctive and unique on and off-stage persona.

And Telemundo will award Jenni Rivera with "El Premio de la Estrella," recognizing the achievements of a musical artist beyond the realm of the performance.

Led by singer/songwrtier Mario Quintero, who has penned all their songs, Los Tucanes de Tijuana, recipients of the first ever "Premio Legado Musical" (Musical Legacy Award), have recorded over 30 albums, becoming the only regional Mexican group to place six titles simultaneously on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart. One of the most successful corrido acts in the market, Los Tucanes redefined that genre, singing about the people and happenings in the Mexican border for nearly 25 years. A stunning 49 songs by Los Tucanes have appeared on the Billboard charts and their music has been heard in countless television and film productions.

Paquita la del Barrio (Paquita From the 'Hood) is an iconoclast with a powerful stream of a voice, a singular repertoire that no one else has dared to imitate and a unique and immediately recognizable presence. Paquita la del Barrio -born Francisca Viveros Barradas- is synonymous with feminist outspokenness, and her favorite line, repeated often in her songs is, "Me estás escuchando, inútil?" (Are you listening, useless one?)

Recording since 1984 and signed to Musart/Balboa since 1992, Paquita la del Barrio has released 33 albums in genres that range from banda and romantic trio to norteño and mariachi. While many others sing about loss, heartache, treachery and deceit, Paquita doesn't just get mad; she gets even; or, as she points out in her hit "Tres Veces te Engañé" (Three Times I Cheated You) - "the first out of anger, the second because I wanted to, the third for pleasure."

Jenni Rivera & Gerardo Ortiz Are Set to Perform at Awards

Jenni Rivera has become one of the most visible and versatile Latin female artists today. With accomplishments as an entrepreneur, producer and host of her own TV and radio shows, Rivera will receive "El Premio de la Estrella," a special award that recognizes the achievements of a musical artist beyond the realm of the performance.  In the recording realm and live music scene, Rivera is today's top-selling female regional Mexican music act.

Rivera has sold more than 1 million albums in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan and her last studio album, La Gran Señora -- her 10th release on the chart--reached No. 2 on the Top Latin Albums chart.

A total of 32 awards will be given at Premios Billboard de la Música Mexicana, including publisher, publishing corporation, producer, songwriter, Album and airplay imprint of the year, and Album and airplay label of the year.  Awards will be given to the top artists and songs overall in regional Mexican music, and also in each of  four sub-genres: ranchera/mariachi, norteño, banda and duranguense/grupero.

Also, for the first time in the history of the Billboard awards on Telemundo, digital track sales were factored into the formula determining the finalists for the top artists and top songs categories.
