Crystal Bowersox Covers Janis Joplin's 'Bobby McGee' On 'Idol'

L ast night's Billboard No. 1s-themed episode of "American Idol" found Cyrstal Bowersox once again ahead of the pack, as she covered Janis Joplin's chart-topping take on Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee." It was a fitting choice for the singer/guitarist, who brought her earthy, Lilith Fair-esque vibe to a song that's been through more than its fair share of lackluster cover versions.

"Idol" judges Kara Dioguardi and Ellen DeGeneres told Bowersox that she could stand "let go" a little more, even suggesting that she ditch her guitar to connect more with the audience. On the other side of the fence were Randy Jackson and notoriously critical Simon Cowell, who had nothing but glowing words for the singer. An exuberant Randy shouted, "That's the way you do it!" while Cowell uttered four words that we never thought we'd hear: "I wouldn't change a thing."

True to form, Bowersox took in the judges' feedback with grace. She even hinted that she has something "special" planned for next week -- if she's still around, of course -- that involves her singing without her favorite instrument. Are you looking forward to seeing Crystal Bowersox without her guitar on "Idol"?
