This weekend in 1964, Buck Owens had a very historic recording session, and the success he enjoyed with the material will not likely be duplicated by any other artist.
At the session, he recorded "My Heart Skips A Beat" and "Together Again." Later that year, Buck was riding high atop the Billboard charts with the former when he knocked himself off the pinnacle of that list with the latter.
An artist replacing themselves at the top of the singles chart could happen today, but what made Buck's feat so rare was that "My Heart Skips A Beat" was the A-side of his Capitol release, and the B-side was "Together Again" -- the very same 45 RPM record. Let's blast back in time and hear those wonderful steel licks from Tom Brumley and that soaring harmony from "Dangerous" Don Rich. It literally does not get any better than this:
