Miguel Goes "Against" Britney Spears

"I'm not sure what Britney's reaction is going to be, but I hope she digs it" says R&B songwriter Miguel of covering Ms. Spears' current hit "Hold It Against Me." Miguel's says his R&B-flavored version is "definitely unique to my style and who I am, so I'm glad we got to cover it."

While Britney Spears, of course, is a veteran of the Billboard charts ("Hold It Against Me" is her latest Hot 100 No. 1 single), Miguel is just at the beginning of his career as a Billboard-charting artist. The title single from his 2010 debut "All I Want Is You" recently rose to No. 7 on the R&B/Hip Hop Songs Chart.

"Hold It Against Me" is a great pop confection that incorporates notes of several genres, and Miguel says he became interested in the tune because of one specific part. "I remember hearing the dubstep portion near the end and thinking this is fly."

With a songwriter's ear -- he's written tunes for the likes of Usher and Mary J. Blige -- it was the melody that ultimately made Miguel decide to cover Britney's song. The chorus, he says, had "the perfect melody [so I could] flip it and make it my own."
