K. Flay Reawakens The Zombies

This week's Mashup Monday brings you a true collision of genres as American rapper K. Flay brings her sultry singing voice, rhymes, laptop and sequencer to bear on a gem from the '60s British Invasion: the Zombies' "Time Of The Season."

K. Flay, born Kristine Flaherty, chose the song, which the Zombies took to No. 3 on the Hot 100 way back in 1969, because "It's got a nice bassline that has sample-ability," she says. But don't be fooled by the one-woman-and-her-machines aesthetic, that's her singing, rapping, and making the sounds.

"As a kid," the 25-year-old from the Chicago area says, "I think the first song I heard was [The Zombies'] "She's Not There" and something about it -- the weird organ, super old school -- really drew me into that. And I got really into British rock from that time."

K. Flay may not yet have seen he chart heights the Zombies did four decades ago, but her music is being heard around the country. She's bringing it next to a pair of SXSW showcases next week in Austin, TX.
