With a 2-1 advance for "If It's Love," Train collects the 100th No. 1 title in the 14-year history of Billboard's Nielsen BDS-based Adult Pop Songs chart.

The survey premiered in the Billboard issue dated March 16, 1996, as an offshoot of the Adult Contemporary chart, a staple of the magazine since 1961.

"Recent years have seen 'hot AC' or 'adult top 40' stations introduce new modern rock, dance and R&B into their ranks," wrote then-Billboard adult chart manager Steve Graybow upon the Adult Pop Songs list's introduction. "While (adult contemporary and adult pop) still share many acts and records, each format has developed its own distinct personality."

Since its inception, the two formats have continued to exhibit notable differences. Goo Goo Dolls (13), matchbox twenty (12), John Mayer, Nickelback (11 each) and Sheryl Crow (10) - all rock-based acts - have totaled the most top 10s on Adult Pop Songs. In the same span, with lighter fare, Celine Dion (13), Jim Brickman (12), Backstreet Boys, Faith Hill and Elton John (10 each) have tallied the most Adult Contemporary top 10s.

In the Adult Pop Songs archives, Nickelback boasts the most No. 1s, with five. With its latest leader, Train ties Daughtry, matchbox twenty and Rob Thomas (separately, as a solo act) for second-most No. 1s (four).

Train previously reigned with "Drops of Jupiter (Tell Me)" (14 weeks, 2001), "Calling All Angels" (five weeks, 2003) and "Hey, Soul Sister" (six weeks, 2010). The band's first No. 1 retains the record for most weeks spent on the survey: 75, between February 2001 and July 2002.

With two No. 1s in 2010, Train is the first act to ascend to No. 1 twice in the same year since Daughtry in 2007.

"The Adult Pop Songs chart is very valuable," says Pete Cosenza, senior  VP/promotion, adult formats, at Train's label, Columbia Records. "It continues to be a place that highlights the power of pop music for adults.

"The chart also shows the variety of music that appeals to adults. You can see how so many of the format's hit songs and artists are a big part of pop culture."

In honor of the survey's milestone No. 1, here is a look at the 100 Adult Pop Songs chart champions. While early No. 1s included adult contemporary-leaning acts such as Mariah Carey, Dion and Eric Clapton, the Lilith Fair boom of the late '90s (Jewel, Paula Cole, Sarah McLachlan) ushered in a rockier era (3 Doors Down, the Fray, Coldplay) that has embodied the chart's core sound since.
