Chart Beat Wednesday: Madonna, Taylor Swift, Jim Brickman

Madonna

'CELEBRATION' CELEBRATION: Madonna extends her lead as the artist with the most hits in the history of Billboard's Dance/Club Play Songs chart, as "Celebration" ignites at No. 29. The title cut from her third greatest hits collection, due Sept. 29, is her 56th entry. A whopping chart-record 39 of those have reached No. 1. Madonna first arrived with the eventual No. 3-peaking "Everybody" on the chart dated Nov. 6, 1982.

Here is a look at the artists to make the most appearances on the Dance/Club Play Songs chart, which first appeared in the Billboard issue dated Oct. 26, 1974:

56, Madonna
37, Janet Jackson
33, Pet Shop Boys
30, Donna Summer
26, Mariah Carey

On the 25-position Hot Dance Airplay radio chart, viewable at billboard.biz, "Celebration" parties in at No. 7, the tally's highest debut since Dec. 13, 2008, when Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" also started at No. 7. Dating to the chart's launch on Aug. 16, 2003, only two other titles have begun higher: Ciara's "1, 2 Step" (No. 5, Jan. 20, 2005) and Madonna's "4 Minutes" (No. 5, April 5, 2008).

With "Celebration" available digitally as of last week, check tomorrow's edition of Chart Beat for an updated look at Madonna's Hot 100 career title count should the song bow on this week's chart.

A GOOD PLACE TO 'BELONG': Taylor Swift snares her fourth No. 1 on Country Songs, as "You Belong With Me" jumps 3-1.

Perhaps it's a coincidence, or somewhat owed to the fact that country radio programmers tend to favor tempo on their playlists, but of Swift's eight career top 10s on Country Songs, all four of her No. 1s have been uptempo tracks. Of her four songs to reach the top 10 but fall short of the summit, three were ballads. "Picture to Burn" is Swift's lone top 10 that has a beat that you can dance to that did not reach No. 1.

Here is a rundown of Swift's top 10 discography on Country Songs:

No. 6, "Tim McGraw"
No. 2, "Teardrops on My Guitar"
No. 1 (six weeks), "Our Song"
No. 3, "Picture to Burn"
No. 1 (two weeks), "Should've Said No"
No. 1 (two weeks), "Love Story"
No. 2, "White Horse"
No. 1 (one week to date), "You Belong With Me"

Swift's current hit also rises 4-3 on Pop Songs/Mainstream Top 40 and blasts 21-14 on Adult Contemporary. It reaches the top 10 (11-10) on Adult Top 40, viewable at billboard.biz.

BRICK HOUSE: In a format long dominated by powerhouse female vocalists from Barbra Streisand to Celine Dion, it might come as a surprise that the artist with the most Adult Contemporary chart hits this decade is a male instrumentalist.

Jim Brickman bows at No. 30 with "Beautiful World (We're All Here)." Brickman plays his trademark piano on the track, which features vocals by Toronto singer Adam Crossley. The song marks Brickman's 28th career visit to the AC list and his format-best 18th since 2000.

Here is a recap of the performers with the most Adult Contemporary chart appearances this decade:

18, Jim Brickman
16, Celine Dion
15, Clay Aiken
14, Josh Groban
13, Rod Stewart
11, Elton John

In addition to cruising up the AC chart regularly, Brickman has annually invited fans to cruise with him to ports such as the Caribbean and the Mexican Riviera. Brickman recently announced plans for next year's voyage (complete with a chance for passengers to join in on "Brick-aoke"), which sets sail for a weeklong visit to Alaska next July.

COMPLETE BEAT: Check back tomorrow when we run down feats from among all our charts, including the Billboard Hot 100, where the Black Eyed Peas and Jason Mraz each seek a share of landmark longevity records. The Peas have spent the last 18 weeks at No. 1, one short of Usher's record streak in 2004. Mraz's 68 chart weeks as of last week for "I'm Yours" left him one week shy of LeAnn Rimes' Hot 100 highwater 69-week stay with "How Do I Live" in 1997-98.
