"Stick Fly," a Broadway play co-produced by Alicia Keys is closing after previews began playing on Nov. 20.
Due to financial failures in the box office, "Stick Fly", written by Lydia R. Diamond, is set to run a last performance on February 26. Last week it brought in $238, 338, close to 26% of it's potential being $903, 858, according to BBC News.
The play depicts the gathering of a rich Black family in their Martha's Vineyard vacation home. It tells the story of two brothers -- played by Dulé Hill and Mekhi Phifer -- who plan to introduce their girlfriends to their parents on the same weekend, "sparking sibling rivalry." "'Stick Fly' is a story that everybody can relate to," Keys said in June when first announcing the play.
"I'm passionate about this play because it is so beautifully written and portrays Black America in a way that we don't often get to see in entertainment," the R&B singer continued.
Despite receiving positive reviews from critics, Cort Theatre ticket sales for Diamond's play were modest, resulting in a financial loss for its producers. By it's closing date (Feb. 26), "Stick Fly" will have run for 24 preview performances and 92 regular performances.
