When Ingrid Michaelson was on Billboard Magazine's cover in January 2008, she was riding high on a wave of television exposure and climbing the charts with her second album "Girls and Boys." Her song "The Way I Am" had been absolutely everywhere thanks to an Old Navy campaign, and there was barely a primetime network slot that hadn't featured her music at one point that season. She was also unsigned, and experimenting with how far she could go by assembling a team of professionals around her own label, Cabin 24 Records.

The experiment worked: "Girls and Boys" topped Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and has sold 278,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her next full-length, 2008's "Be Ok," hit No. 35 on the Billboard 200 and has sold 98,000 units. Still independent, Michaelson will release her fourth album, "Everybody," on August 25, and Billboard.com has the exclusive premiere of the title track.
