'80s teen queens Debbie Gibson and Tiffany kicked off their "Journey Through the '80s" collaborative tour by performing Friday (July 29) in New York's Central Park on ABC's "Good Morning America" as part of the wake-up show's "Summer Concert Series."

The pair then took to the stage for the first of six scheduled dates this summer, beginning that night at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury in Westbury, N.Y. (near Gibson's hometown of Merrick).

Long rumored rivals due to their chart battles in 1987-89 - each singer scored two Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s, Tiffany with "I Think We're Alone Now" (1987) and "Could've Been" (1988); Gibson with "Foolish Beat" (1988) and "Lost in Your Eyes" (1989) - the twosome rarely crossed paths at the time.

As their legacies became entwined and '80s nostalgia grew, Gibson and Tiffany fulfilled fans' wishes by teaming for the kitschy TV movie "Mega Python Vs. Gatoroid," which premiered on Syfy in January.

Following her "Good Morning America" performance, Gibson told Chart Beat that after the twosome teamed for the horror flick and their chemistry as friends became apparent, "musically, it was time to pull the trigger."

Gibson, who makes a self-effacing cameo as Katy Perry's mother in the video for "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," is preparing a studio set, her first since the covers collection "Colored Lights: The Broadway Album" in 2003, while Tiffany earlier this year released her first country album, "Rose Tattoo."

Tiffany gave Chart Beat a sneak preview not only of the songs that she'll perform on the "Journey Through the '80s" tour, but also the retro fashion that (even she can't believe) she'll sport.

Following the tour's opening night Friday, which launched with Gibson and Tiffany aptly duetting on Eurythmics' "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves" (a No. 18 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1985), upcoming stops include the North Shore Music Theatre in Beverly, Mass. (Aug. 7), and the House of Blues in Cleveland (10), before the tour wraps Aug. 13 at the House of Blues in Chicago.
