“I like these talking blues things.”

Randy Newman sat down backstage at the Billboard/Hollywood Reporter Film & TV Music Conference to talk about his writing process for film, specifically his work on animated films like “Monsters University” and the “Toy Story” trilogy, and the ease with which he writes for a project as opposed to himself; “Given an assignment about an Albanian goat herd lost in Bulgaria, I could write it. But pulling them out of the air is more difficult.” Also discussed was Newman’s successful 1974 album “Good Old Boys,” which saw him writing pop tunes alongside a symphony orchestra, which was “in retrospect… a hell of a privilege.”
