Competing Spanish-language networks Telemundo and Univision announced several musical additions to their programming during their upfronts this week in New York.

Most notably, the Telemundo Network will add music reality competition series "La Voz: Niños" (The Voice: Kids) and entertainment special "Todos Somos Héroes" (We're All Heroes) to its roster, plus a series based on the life of José José. All told, Telemundo announced nearly 900 hours of new programming, an increase of over 40% compared to the previous year.

"La Voz: Niños" will feature kids 6-14 performing a blind audition before celebrity singers who will then coach them through the competition, much like the original show does. "Todos Somos Héroes" will be a two-hour entertainment gala honoring everyday heroes and featuring musical performances throughout.

Telemundo will also air "Nace un Idolo," a seralized biography based on the life of Mexican star José José. The series is produced by Telemundo Studios Production. The network will also reprise the Billboard Mexican Music Awards this fall, devoted to regional Mexican music.

In addition, through Telemundo Digital, Telemundo launched its Telemundo Entertainment App, which will feature bilingual content from both Telemundo and mun2.

On its end, Univision announced a programming line-up that includes new music-driven shows as well as programming tweaks to existing properties that will incorporate music. Most interestingly, the networks' long-running morning show, "Despierta América," will produce an outdoor concert series that will air on Fridays this summer. And, as previously reported on Billboard, the network will run a special celebrating the 50th anniversary of variety show "Sábado Gigante." The special, featuring a wide array of artists who have performed in the show through the years, will be heavily promoted on all Univision platforms.

Univision will also run a 40th anniversary special on Juan Gabriel, the Mexican star, filmed in Acapulco and produced by Televisa.

Also airing on the Univision network will be "Pequeños Gigantes 2," the second installment of the kiddie talent reality show.

On its end, Univision.com will continue with online shows "De Gira," which follows an artist on tour each month, and "Univision InStudio," the acoustic performance/interview series.

Shakira and Pitbull performed at the Univision upfront earlier today and Wisin & Yandel performed tonight at the Telemundo upfront, sources say.
