"Men in Black: The Musical," anyone?
Sony Pictures Entertainment has struck a five-year deal with Scott Sanders Theatrical Productions to develop and produce theater projects from the Sony Pictures film library.
Sony Pictures Entertainment Worldwide Music president Lia Vollack will oversee the studio's theatrical productions and will serve as the Sony Pictures liaison with SSTP. She is being given the added title of executive VP, Theatrical.
As part of the agreement, Sony has purchased a 20% equity stake in Scott Sanders Theatrical Productions. SSTP will serve as Sony Pictures' s primary theatrical consultant to help set up titles adapted by other third-party producers. The equity investment will allow SPE the opportunity to open up its extensive film library for stage adaptations.
Among Sanders' Broadway production credits are "The Color Purple," "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty," "Dame Edna: Back With a Vengeance" and the Broadway concert version of "Chess" with Josh Groban. SSTP's current production is "Evita"; their next project is "Houdini."
In addition, Sanders has tapped Broadway veteran Sandy Block, formerly Chief Creative Officer of Serino/Coyne, to producer/VP, Theater. Block developed marketing campaigns for musicals such as "Jersey Boys," "The Book of Mormon," "Hairspray," "The Lion King" and "The Producers."
