Lady Gaga has reportedly been denied her spot on Dorito's stage during SXSW due to public safety concerns. The news was first brought to our attention by local website Austin360.
Billboard reached out to Doritos who declined to comment. Following publication of this story, however, a source familiar with the event told Billboard that Lady Gaga is expected to perform in some capacity and that an official announcement will come soon.
The Doritos stage, located in a parking lot behind an italian restaurant one block off of 6th St, SXSW's busiest (pictured below).
"We informed the applicant that we would support relocation to an established venue with the necessary permanent infrastructure," a representative of the city told Austin360.
It's understandable that Austin officials would be cautious, given the raucous turn of the 2011 fest that was followed up with minor incidents in 2012 and a (relatively) peaceful 2013, indicating the city began to more closely examine situations like the one Gaga's performance at the Dorito's Stage could produce.
Lady Gaga has been beset by troubles that started around the time of her most recent album's release, including a split with longtime manager Troy Carter and less-than-stellar first week sales. However, the singer's residency at New York's Roseland Ballroom, a far smaller venue than the singer usually books, sold out all of its seven dates in late March.
