Timberlake Tops Hot Tours With North American Dates

Justin Timberlake has kicked off his touring schedule for 2014 with an 18-city trek that will keep him on the road in the U.S. and Canada through early March.  Box office sales reported from the first six markets give the pop star the top slot in the weekly Hot Tours recap based on revenue from more than 93,000 sold tickets.

The 20/20 Experience world tour launched in early November, playing 22 arenas during its first North American leg that wrapped on Dec. 19.  Following a brief holiday break, Timberlake’s tour resumed in Edmonton, the first stop on the second North American trek that is set to wrap on March 5 in Miami. The Edmonton date was a two-show engagement at the Rexall Place arena with sellout crowds on both nights (Jan. 13 and 14).  With a two-night attendance total of 26,873, the Edmonton arena sold the most tickets at a single venue since the 20/20 Experience tour began.  The arena’s $2.8 million sales sum is also the second-highest sum for the tour thus far. Only a two-show run at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas grossed more with $3.6 million for shows on Nov. 29 and 30.

A Vancouver performance followed the Edmonton opener, and then the tour began a swing through seven U.S. cities.  Denver’s Pepsi Center produced the top gross and attendance counts among the four U.S. arenas included in this week’s tally.  The Jan. 22 concert drew a crowd of 13,839 with $1.6 million in sold tickets.

Jay Z earns the second slot on the list of Hot Tours with ticket sales reported from two dates on his Magna Carter world tour, currently on the road in North America.  The rapper grossed more than $1.8 million at a venue in Canada and one in the U.S.  The Canadian date was a sold out performance in Montreal on Jan. 24 with 11,282 sold seats, and the American performance occurred on Jan. 17 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.  Touring in support of his 2013 album "Magna Carta Holy Grail," Jay Z launched his tour in early October in England and covered 12 European markets that month.  The North American leg began in November and will continue through the end of January.

Grammy-winning country trio Lady Antebellum enters the Hot Tours ranking at No. 4 with the first reported ticket sales totals from the Take Me Downtown tour that began on Jan. 10 in Peoria, Ill.  Concert promoter Frank Productions of Madison, Wis. reported box office stats from three of the first venues on the 2014 tour itinerary including the tour opener at the Peoria Civic Center.  Kip Moore and Kacey Musgraves are providing support for the tour that is booked in arenas, outdoor amphitheaters and various summer fairs and festivals through late July.
