So ended the excitement of Jay Z fans this past Saturday afternoon hoping to catch a secret show from the rapper and executive, alonside supposed guests Justin Timberlake and Beyonce, at a location in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. According to two sources, the story began with an erroneous email from a mailing list. XXL then posted an item about the show on Friday, the first mention of the rumor Billboard was able to find online. The rumor was then put into overdrive on Saturday via RevoltTV, Sean Combs' new TV venture in a since-deleted tweet that seemed to confirm the event. (XXL has archived the tweet here.) Okayplayer was also in on the mill:

Police arrived on the scene at noon, barricading the street as would be expected for an outside event which led many to believe Hova would indeed appear. However, the police left promptly at 3PM, leading one waiting Billboard correspondent to wonder whether a permit had been obtained but put to no use.
It's not hard to understand how fans were made to believe the event was happening, what with MTV's Video Music Awards just around the corner both chronologically and geographically (after a fashion), as well as Jay Z's recent secret "art" performance in Manhattan. Coverage from Gothamist, the Atlantic and Bushwick Daily makes plain fans' disappointment at the so-close-but-so-far scuttling.
Here's what the scene looked like:
Billboard.biz has reached out to Jay Z's representatives for comment -- our request was not returned at press time. We will, of course, update this story accordingly.
