Backbeat: Green Day Rocks SXSW, Producer Tim Lynch Talks 'Quatro!'

Unsurprisingly, Green Day played a barrage of hits and deep-cuts (as well as selections from their “Uno!” “Dos!” “Tre!” trilogy) at their show at the Moody Theater/ACL Live as part of South By Southwest last night. What is surprising – especially given that before the show it seemed most of the tickets were distributed via lottery to festival badge holders – is that it felt almost like a fanclub-only show (judging by the young age of many of the attendees and the lack of badges on display, chances are they actually released more tickets to the public than to the festival.)

That said, Tim Lynch – the recent “Big Easy Express” Grammy winner who produced “Quatro!” the new documentary on the band – was excited to see them during his short visit to SXSW (he jetted in earlier on Friday, and was leaving on Saturday.) “We came in today to show [the movie] – we set out to make a lifestyle roc doc, and I think we did that.”

Singer Billie Joe Armstrong recently had a public bout with addiction, and Lynch addressed the role of his personal battles on the interest the documentary's received. “I think people wanted to see the band come back and do their thing. They cut the tour short – so it's good to see them come back again.”

On the rest of his South By, he teased that he'd be back to show a new movie next year, but for now, he's only excited about one other thing: “tacos at Joe's!”
