Warped is apparently gearing-up for a return Down Under. The multi-city trek is expected to kick off at the end of 2013, visiting various stops on the country’s east coast.
At this point, little is known on the bill, the dates or the venues, though sources tell Billboard.biz the shows are looking to start with “quite low capacities.” Australia’s festivals marketplace is busy, some say swamped. Starting with a smaller capacity would be a prudent way to test the waters.
The local partner on the Warped tour of Australia will be AJ Maddah, the promoter of the hugely successful hard rock and heavy metal Soundwave trek. News of the Warped Australia plans started with a splash on the big screens at Soundwave’s opening leg in Brisbane on Saturday. Maddah, a keen Twitter user, then keep the ball rolling on the social network by suggesting the #WarpedAus hashtag.
Kevin Lyman’s long-running festival has had a crack at Australia. Back in 2002, Michael Chugg teamed to bring the show to these shores, with a three-stage line-up that included Pennywise, Guttermouth, MxPX and the Vandals and New Found Glory
Warped has a hardcore fanbase in Australia. A Facebook page “Bring Vans Warped Tour back to Australia” has more than 1,700 “likes”.
