London's Southbank Centre has snatched the No. 1 spot in the 2011 top 100 U.K. music venues as compiled by PRS for Music, the U.K. authors' collecting society. The news, based on the number of attendees, acts and individual music performances at the venues analyzed, is among a recent series of announcements proclaiming the Best of British in the music industry as the country's Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations gather momentum.

Southbank Centre, which comprises the Royal Festival Hall (seating capacity 2,500), Queen Elizabeth Hall (900), Purcell Room (365) and the Hayward Gallery, hosted 422 music events in 2011. Last year's pop and rock highlights included shows by singer-songwriter legend Richard Thompson, musical theater star Elaine Paige, rising star Rumer, Loudon Wainwright III and The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson.

How Ten New or Renovated Venues Are Reshaping The Nation's Touring Circuit

In the rankings (full-list below), Southbank Centre was followed by The Sage Gateshead in Tyne & Wear, north England; O2 Academy in Birmingham; The Stables in Milton Keynes; Ronnie Scott's in London; O2 Academy in Islington, north London; Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester; O2 Academy in Newcastle, North East England; King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Scotland; and Kings Place in London.

Other conclusions from PRS' analysis, which was based on data supplied by more than 10,000 live-music venues, include the following: the top 100 venues put on 13,781 concerts last year; the top five venues accounted for 1,829 concerts; and London represented 30% of the 100 live venues.

"It is an enormous accomplishment to run a successful live-music space and, in spite of economic challenges, the British live-music scene is still strong," said Robert Ashcroft, PRS for Music's CEO, in a statement.

British Pubs To Rock Even Harder: Why the U.K. Live Music Act Matters

The organizations behind the U.K.'s £3.9bn ($6.12 billion) total music business, including recorded and live, have been highlighting their creative assets as the nation celebrates the Queen's Diamond Jubilee (to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 60-year reign) in June.

The nation voted The Number of the Beast, the third studio album by heavy metal stalwarts Iron Maiden in 1982 as the Best British Album of the last 60 years in a survey organized by HMV, the music-retail giant.

Based on a month-long poll for the Best British Album and the Best British Film, HMV received 54,545 responses in total via its Facebook app. From the estimated 30,000 that voted for the best albums, 2,754 voted for The Number of the Beast (EMI Music).

It was followed by Depeche Mode's Violator, released in 1990 by Mute Records in Europe and Sire/Reprise in North America, with The Beatles' Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in third place.

Meanwhile, PPL, the U.K. collecting society that collects broadcast and public-performance royalties for the labels and artists, has signed an agreement with six new European territories: Croatia, Estonia, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania and Portugal.

"We already cover a significant part of the global market by value of collections; we are now looking to fill in the gaps and ensure that our members are being paid from all the smaller markets," said Laurence Oxenbury, PPL's director of international, in a statement.
