Super D, which last month beefed up its indie distribution operation with the hiring of Tim Hinsley as GM, has been moving to enhance its label roster. The Irvine, Calif.-based company has signed three labels for exclusive U.S. distribution: Honolulu-based Tropical Music, St. Louis-based Gridiron Records and Anderson, S.C.-based Shaman Work.
Tropical, which specialized in Hawaian music, has a catalog which includes Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, Makaha Sons, and Hui `Ohana. Tropical, which previously was distributed by Navarre, plans releases from Justin Young and Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau featuring Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.
Shaman Work, an eclectic hip-hop collective, has a catalog with releases that features such artsits as John Robinson, C.L. Smooth, Wise Intelligent, K. Banger, Sene, T., Emanon, Scienz of Life, DJ K.O., and Blackberry Jones.
Upcoming releases from the label, previously distributed by Koch Entertainment Distribution, include new albums from Build an Ark and Blackberry Jones. Shaman Work was formerly distributed by Koch.
And Gridiron, which was formed by ex-Snot/Soulfly guitarist Mikey Doling and NFL mainstay Kyle Turley, will issue an album from Invitro, which featuring Doling and members of the Wizards. The label's key staffers include president Max Harris and former EMI executive Tim Pickett and former Snot manager Nic Adler.
