For the third time this year, weekly album sales have dipped under the 5 million mark, and this week established the latest low watermark for that measure in the history of Nielsen SoundScan.

Album sales for the week ending Sept. 12 were 4.83 million, which is down from the previous low of 4.95, set for the week ending Aug. 15. And that was down from the 4.98 million for the week ending May 30, the first ever dip under the 5 million mark for weekly album sales.

Of course, the music industry is no longer mainly dependent on album sales as it has many different digital streams coming its way, record label executives like to point out. But music industry executives would rather not see album sales dip below the 5 million mark, regardless of what's going on with other revenue streams.
