What's better than a sure thing? A guaranteed sure thing, obviously. Uvinyl, the London-based "home of Universal Music vinyl," recently launched a re-pressing initiative they call The Vinyl Project which aims to be exactly that.

Universal and Uvinyl characterized The Vinyl Project as a "crowd-funded vinyl service." The "crowdfunding" portion of The Vinyl Project, however, would seem to amount to a conditional preorder, similar in practice to crowdfunding but far from its spirit of patronage for struggling artists who can't afford to bring their art to market. If a slab garners enough interest, then the orders will be filled, people will be charged, and everyone pleased.
The Project's homepage also touts "sought-after deleted records to be re-pressed;" but many of the titles (see below) like Cat Stevens' Teaser & the Firecat or Bjork's Biophilia -- while great records -- may not be much "sought after." (Biophilia was released but two years ago, and designed to be a touchscreen experience by Bjork and her team.)
After filling out an sign-up form on the Project's homepage and confirming participation, respondents are then directed to a survey about the forthcoming service, the completion of which will earn them a 20% discount on a "specially selected vinyl range at Uvinyl." Questions include respondents' geographical region, things they look for when purchasing vinyl, supplemental material preferences and most importantly, their interest in a list of records that the Project may repress in the future, including Sting's The Dream of the Blue Turtles and a Motörhead Ace of Spades picture disc. (A full list of the records mentioned in the survey is below).
