While SESAC has cut a deal to represent the complete Kurt Cobain catalog -- as the organization announced on April 7 -- for the remainder of this year, a good portion of the late songwriter's catalog rights will remain with BMI.
According to information provided by BMI and confirmed by an additional source, BMI retains representation of the writer's share of Cobain's estate until the end of the Q1 2015. The Primary Wave publishing portion of the Cobain catalog, now owned by BMG Chrysalis, will stay with BMI until the end of 2014. Meanwhile, End Of Music, the Cobain publishing company, switched from BMI to SESAC two weeks ago, on April 1.
"SESAC already represents a substantial piece of the Cobain catalog," the company said in a statement. "Other pieces will move over in time as is customary in this industry."
