U.K. rights society the MCPS-PRS Alliance has signed its first blanket TV license agreement with MTV Networks (MTVN) Europe.

The deal, which covers the use of the Alliance's catalog of 10 million music works on 35 MTVN channels Europe-wide, is effective immediately.

Additionally, it also includes reproducing music in long-form TV programs.

"It's a wide-ranging deal whose scope is consistent with our strategy of simplifying the licensing process for broadcasters," comments Andrew Shaw, the Alliance's managing director of broadcast and online, in a statement.

"This landmark deal," adds Roger James, VP, business and legal affairs, MTV Networks U.K., Ireland and International, will for the first time, grant us wide-ranging access to the Alliance's entire catalog across our portfolio of channels in Europe and underlines the Company's ongoing commitment to strengthening our relationship with the publishers and collecting societies in general."

Until now, MTVN Europe, which started as a single-feed pan-European service in 1987 before eventually localizing its services, had separate licenses from MCPS (for mechanical rights) and from PRS (for performing rights).
