The Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) has reached a deal with EMI Music Publishing UK to become its collection society on the islands.

COTT will administer all royalties from the broadcast and live performance of songs written by EMI Music Publishing writers on the islands. Previously, EMI had had representation in the area through a reciprocal agreement with PRS For Music (previously the MCPS-PRS Alliance).

“We have always recognized Trinidad and Tobago as a vibrant place for
producing talent, and as with other Caribbean islands, EMI Music Publishing stands out among the major publishers for its track record of investment in the music of the region,” EMI Music Publishing UK President Guy Moot said in a statement. “There is a strong music market in Trinidad and Tobago, and it’s vital that we take all steps to ensure that the rights of our songwriters are administered in as effective a way as possible. Working with COTT will allow us to provide the best possible service to the writers of today, while at the same time helping to ensure that future writers have a strong collection society in place to champion music in the region.”

Commenting on the deal, COTT's CEO Allison Demas said in a statement, “The signing of EMI as a publisher member of COTT further solidifies COTT’s reputation as a pioneering and progressive collecting society in the Caribbean region. COTT is committed to ensuring that copyright protected music is effectively administered in Trinidad and Tobago for the benefit of the world’s creators and publishers of music."

EMI Music Publishing has more than one million copyrights including some of the best-known songs ever written, such as “New York New York”, “You’ve Got A Friend”, “The James Bond Theme”, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, "Over The Rainbow”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” and “Singin’ In the Rain”. Its current hit-making writers and producers include Arctic Monkeys, Beyoncé, James Blunt, Duffy, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Pink, Scouting For Girls, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse.
