EMI Music Publishing has agreed a sub-publishing deal in the United Arab Emirates with Fairwood Music (Arabia) - the leading music publishing operation in the Middle East and North Africa (Billboard, April 25).

Under the terms of the deal, Dubai-based Fairwood will actively pitch EMI Music Publishing repertoire for synchronization uses within the UAE, including TV, film and advertising. Fairwood will also work with EMI to establish a mechanical and performance licensing framework in the UAE.

The agreement marks the first time that EMI Music Publishing has contracted with a sub-publisher based in the Middle East.

Fairwood Music (Arabia) has worked with EMI Music Publishing over the last 18 months, initially acting as a clearance service for advertising agencies and other commercial users of music. The new agreement will see Fairwood offer comprehensive music publishing services as EMI seeks to place more emphasis on the region.

Commenting on the deal, EMI Music Publishing U.K. head of business affairs Jo Smith said in a statement: "The United Arab Emirates is still a relatively new market for music publishing, but we're seeing tremendous growth and vitality and want to make sure that our songwriters are able to take advantage of the opportunities that are beginning to emerge."

Fairwood Music (Arabia) managing director Hussain "Spek" Yoosuf added: "You can't really overstate the significance and breadth of the EMI Music Publishing catalog. Their songwriters and songs have incredible reach in our region as they do around the world, and we look forward to working with them to open up those opportunities in this part of the world."

EMI Music Publishing's current hit writers include Beyonce, James Blunt, Duffy, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Pink, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams.

In August 2008, Fairwood Music (Arabia), a joint venture between Dubai music production company BKP and London-based publisher Fairwood Music International, signed a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group to become UMPG's sub-publisher in the UAE and its licensee in the Middle East and North Africa.

In March 2009, the company signed a sub-publishing deal with Cherry Lane Music Publishing for the Middle East. Fairwood/BKP also represents Stage 3 Music, Budde Music, Roy Orbison and the RZO David Bowie catalogs in the region.

The company has recently rebranded having previously been known as Fairwood/BKP Music.
