Universal Music Publishing Group has announced the appointment of John Echevarria as executive VP for UMPG Latin America and confirmed to Billboard.biz that Eddie Fernandez, Sr. VP of UMPG Latin America, is departing. Both men have long careers in the Latin music industry working in both label and publishing operations.
Echevarría, who was formerly executive VP of Operations for Latin America for Universal Music Group International as well as acting President of Universal Music Group International, Andean Region, will continue to be based in Miami. Region-wide, he will report jointly to Zach Horowitz, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Publishing Group and to Jesús López, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Latin America/Iberian Peninsula. In the U.S., he will report jointly to Horowitz and to Evan Lamberg, president, UMPG North America.
In his new post, Echevarría will oversee UMPG's Latin operations, catalog and roster, which includes Juan Gabriel, Juanes, Rudy Perez, Jorge Luis Piloto, KC Porter, Gustavo Santaolalla, Kike Santander, Chino y Nacho, Los Amigos Invisibles and Sergio Vallín, as well as Gloria and Emilio Estefan Jr.'s catalog, among many others.
Echevarría's background is in both the label side and in publishing. Prior to his latest post at Universal Music Group International, he presided over Universal Music Latino for years and was instrumental in the development of Juanes and Luis Fonsi, among others. But prior to that post, he headed Sony/ATV's publishing operations for Latin America for eight years. Highly respected in the intellectual property world, Echevarría has also sat on the boards of the Latin American Federation of Music Publishers (FLADEM); and the Spanish Association of Music Publishers (AEDEM).
"John's extensive experience in Latin music, both in publishing and recorded music, is extraordinary," said Horowitz. "His insights into the Latin culture and Latin consumer, and his network of contacts throughout the Latin American region, will uniquely position us for great success in the years to come."
"I look forward to building upon this already successful operation, expanding our business in the region, and taking on the challenges ahead," said Echevarria in a statement.
Fernández, who spent six years as Sr. VP UMPG, Latin America, also has a background in both label and publishing worlds. A pianist and arranger and former A&R executive, Fernandez was instrumental in signing the likes of Ruben Blades and Wisin & Yandel to UMPG and in renewing deals with Rudy Perez and Jorge Luis Piloto, among others.
Fernandez also headed the company's publishing operation during the integration of BMG and later, Univision Music Publishing to Universal. Fernandez, who was named last year to Billboard's Latin Power Players list, also negotiated the Estefan's FIPP catalog for representation in the U.S. and Canada.
