Two major booking agencies on opposite continents -- Lotus Booking in Chile and Charco in Spain -- have joined together to create a new booking and management company, Charco Chile, that will integrate acts from both.
Based in Santiago de Chile, Charco Chile’s roster will include major Latin and Spanish rock and alternative acts, including Molotov, Francisca Valenzuela, Lucybell, Babasónicos and Juana Molina, among many others.
The company will be headed by José de la Barra, the talent buyer (and brother of co-founder Sebastian de la Barra) of Lotus Producciones, the company that puts together Lollapalooza in Chile.
The launch of Charco Chile comes in the wake of a wave of new music festivals across Latin America that has opened the door for rock and alternative bands to play more than ever before, and also, to open up new markets in other regions. Already, Charco operates beyond Spain and books artists in markets like Asia, Russia and South Africa.
"It's a unique opportunity for Latin American artists to have this kind of representation and who traditionally haven't worked with an agency in the way artists do so in the U.S. or England, for example," de la Barra told Billboard. The company will initially operate with a staff of six people in Santaigo de Chile plus Charco's offices in Spain. "We wanted to create a unified agency that could provide a more professional service. And by bringing them both together, we can have many different genres in one place."
De la Barra's partners in Charco in Spain are Miguel Garrido (who has long booked Argentine band Babasónicos) and Agustín López Costa (who books Juana Molina, among other acts). Aside from booking talent, the Spanish company, launched in 2012, produces boutique festivals and acts as a consultant for multiple conferences and fairs.
In addition to producing Lollapalooza Chile, Lotus Producciones will also begin producing the SonarSound Chile fest this year. Like Lollapalooza, the festival is an off-shoot of another property -- electronic/dance fest Sonar in Barcelona, whose lineup this year includes the Chemical Brothers, Die Antwoord, A$AP Rocky, Skrillex and Duran Duran.
Lotus also produces major shows in Chile by the likes of Pearl Jam. The company’s booking arm -- Lotus Booking -- which was run by de la Barra, will now be folded into Charco Chile.
