Universal Music Publishing Group signed a deal with Sugar Hill Music to administer their entire catalog in the United States, UMPG Chairman/CEO Zach Horowitz and Sugar Hill founder/CEO Joey Robinson announced today. Sugar Hill's repertoire includes much of the early hip-hop and R&B that sprung up in the 1980s such as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's "The Message," in addition to tracks such as The Moments' "Love On A Two Way Street," and Sylvia Robinson's "Pillow Talk."

“My brothers and I are really excited about the opportunity of working with Zach, Evan Lamberg, and the entire UMG family," said Joey Robinson in a statement. "I've known Zach since the MCA Record days, and to now have the opportunity to work close with him with our catalog, as well as with new songwriters and publishers we are signing to our roster, will only help take Sugar Hill Music legacy to the next generation."

Sugar Hill Music is closely associated with the career of singer, songwriter and record executive Sylvia Robinson, who, in addition to having a successful career as a singer in Mickey & Sylvia and as a producer and songwriter. Robinson and her husband Joe created All Platinum Records in the 1960s, signing The Moments, and founded Sugar Hill Records in 1979, which became a seminal label for the beginnings of hip-hop.

“Sugar Hill’s publishing catalog is a testament to the vision of Sylvia Robinson, one of the true pioneers of the music business," said Horowitz in a statement. "As a performer, writer, producer, talent finder, and record company owner she played a critical role in creating some of the most memorable and culturally significant songs of the modern music era. We couldn’t be more excited to be working with her sons to build on her legacy."

UMPG now boasts an extensive catalog of hip-hop heavyweights, including tracks by Eric B. and Rakim, Run DMC, Tupac, the Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, EPMD, Slick Rick, KRS-One, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, and more.
