Gerardo Ortiz, Joan Sebastian to Perform at Billboard Mexican Music Awards

The Billboard Mexican Music Awards 2013 will feature some of the biggest names in the business who will take to the stage including Joan Sebastian, Banda El Recodo de Cruz Lizarraga, Gerardo Ortiz and Banda Los Recoditos. 

The show, airing live on Telemundo and taking place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on October 9, will also include performances by Julion Alvarez y su Norteño Banda, Calibre 50, Los Inquietos del Norte and Roberto Junior y su Bandeño, all major players in the regional Mexican genre in the U.S. and beyond. The program will air at 7 p.m. ET (6 CT).

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, the invitation-only awards show will pay tribute to some of the most celebrated Mexican music including banda, norteño, ranchero, mariachi, duranguense, grupero and cumbia. 

"Regional Mexican music is the top-selling genre of Latin music in the United States.," said Leila Cobo, executive director for Latin content and programming at Billboard. "It's a rich, incredibly diverse genre with dynamic acts in a multitude of sub-genres Billboard is immensely proud to lead the celebration of the top artists and music in the genre."

Finalists who will share the national spotlight for their contributions to music in the popular banda style include Roberto Tapia, Banda el Recodo, La Arrolladora Banda el Limón de René Camacho and the late Jenni Rivera. 

Bands being recognized for their work in norteño, music that originates from urban and rural areas in northern Mexico with accordion as the primary instrument, include Ortiz, Noel Torres, Voz de Mando, Pesado, Intocable and Calibre 50. 

Several finalists known for their duranguense style include El Trono de Mexico, Roberto Junior y Su Bandeño, Tierra Cali, Conjunto Primavera, Los Temerarios and 3BallMTY.
