ARIA Awards Confirm Date, Venue

The Australia record industry’s 27th ARIA Awards will take place Dec. 1 at a new venue, the Event Centre in Sydney’s The Star.

The parties kick off earlier with the “ARIA Week” of gigs and masterclasses, all of which serve as entrees for the main course that is the flagship awards show on the Sunday night.

Last year’s inaugural “ARIA Week” brought more than 3,000 visitors from overseas, interstate and intrastate into Sydney, injecting $1.4 million into the state of New South Wales’ economy, according to events agency Destination NSW.

The Nine Networks' digital channel GO! will again handle the broadcast of the ceremony, while YouTube and radio networks Nova Austero and Triple J return as sponsors.

Digital music service Rdio comes on board in 2013 as the ARIA Awards "official streaming partner," while the collecting society PPCA will sponsor the “breakthrough artist” award category.

ARIA CEO Dan Rosen tells Billboard the show will air across Asia for the first time through the Australia Network.

ARIA is angling for an intimate feel with the new venue, which has a capacity of just 4,000. Last year’s show was configured for about 10,000, while previous editions were held at the 20,000-capacity Allphones Arena.

“It’s been an amazing year for Australian music,” Rosen says. “We’ve had 10 No. 1 Australian albums which we haven’t had since 2004. The ARIA Awards can help reflect that (success) and amplify that to more people in Australia and abroad.”

The winners of the ARIA Fine Arts and Artisan Awards will be announced at the 2013 ARIA nominations event Oct. 15 at the Art Gallery of NSW.
