2013 MuchMusic Video Awards Nominations Announced

Vancouver's pop-rock band Marianas Trench -- now a headlining arena act in Canada after a dozen years of hard work, and whose frontman Josh Ramsay co-wrote Carly Rae Jepsen's ubiquitous "Call Me Maybe" -- leads the 2013 MuchMusic Video Awards with six nominations, followed by Toronto-born rapper Drake with five and Nova Scotia rapper Classified with four.

All three of those acts are up against each other for Video of the Year, alongside Serena Ryder and The Weeknd; and Your Fave Video, rounded out by Billy Talent and Hedley.

The awards show takes place June 16 in Toronto, on a giant main stage in the MuchMusic headquarters' parking lot and on the adjacent street's smaller stage, surrounded by an estimated 10,000 fans. The presentation airs live at 9 p.m. on Fuse in the U.S. and presenting station MuchMusic in Canada. The red carpet arrivals begin at 8 p.m.

Other categories include Director of the Year, Dance Video, Pop Video, Rock/Alternative Video, Hip Hop Video, Post-Production of the Year, MuchFACT Video of the Year (videos made with grant money from MuchFACT) and Your Fave Artist/Group — all recognizing Canadian artists. Then there are categories for non-Canucks: International Video of the Year — Artist; International Video of the Year — Group; and Your Fave International Artist Or Group. And one for International Video of the Year By A Canadian (See below for complete list of song/video titles in each category).

Triple nods go to videos from deadmau5, Billy Talent and Serena Ryder, while even more artists are up for a pair of MMVAs — PSY, who will be co-hosting and performing at the awards; Demi Lovato, who is also performing; plus One Direction, Pink, Carly Rae Jepsen, Taylor Swift, Hedley, Justin Bieber, Metric, The Sheepdogs and Young Empires.

All the winners are determined internally, except for the three Your Fave categories for which fans can vote at mmva.muchmusic.com.

According to an email provided to Billboard from MuchMusic's PR department, "Our Music Committee — who screen all videos that are submitted for rotation —democratically determine the nominees and winners for the MuchMusic Video Awards. They take various factors into consideration, including overall quality of the song / video, popularity of the song / video, artistic merit, and how the song performed on radio, print, and online charts. Social media activity and stats are taken into consideration as well. "
