EMI Group U.K. has appointed Ayesha Hazarika as VP, industry and government affairs, reporting to Victoria Bassetti, EMI's senior VP of government relations.

The former chief press secretary to Patricia Hewitt, U.K. Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Hazarika will coordinate EMI's government relations in the U.K., and liaise with trade associations such as the BPI, PPL, AIM and British Music Rights.

Bassetti commented: "It's vital that EMI's voice is heard when the U.K. government is devising and implementing policies which affect the music industry and wider creative sectors. Ayesha has a firm grasp of the issues that affect us and with her experience of working in a number of Whitehall departments is ideally suited to this role."

Hazarika joined EMI in February 2005 as business co-ordinator, Group chairman's office and was assigned to the Labour Party in April and May of that year to work on the Prime Minister's campaign during the general election. She's also a successful stand-up comedian, and will continue to appear on BBC Radio Five Live, BBC Radio 4, LBC and BBC Asian Network, as well as perform on the London comedy circuit.
