Sony Corp. on Friday launched a video-sharing Web site in Japan that is seen as a potential rival to YouTube.

The eyeVio service enables users to download clips from the Web site onto personal computers as well as portable devices such as Sony's Walkman terminals and PSP game consoles.

Sony has pledged to keep an eye on the site to prevent unauthorized uploading and distribution of copyrighted material. The Japanese electronics giant has not announced any plans to launch eyeVio overseas.
