Social networking site Bebo has recruited former MTV executive Angel Gambino to drive its music ambitions.

Gambino takes the newly-created post of vice president, music, based at Bebo's international headquarters in London. She reports to Joanna Shields, Bebo president of international.

Her appointment comes a month after Bebo teamed up with British online music retailer 7digital to enable artists to sell music directly to consumers.

In a statement issued by the SNS, Gambino will be responsible for "helping artists and labels to harness the power of Bebo's base of 31 million users worldwide, enabling them to extend their reach and form one-to-one relationships with their audience."

Gambino will also be tasked with creating innovative partnerships between artists, brands and retailers.

"I'm passionate about music and so are Bebo's 31 million users and music fans," said Gambino in the statement.

"Content rich profiles offer a real opportunity to combine the interests of both artists and their fans," she said. "By working together with music labels to develop one to one relationships between bands and their audiences, and by helping new bands get discovered, we're creating a place where music can thrive."

Gambino joins Bebo from MTV, where she served as VP commercial, strategy and digital media.
