German independent music company edel is merging its two digital distribution businesses.

The Hamburg-based firm's edelNET unit will be rolled into its Kontor New Media arm, by Oct. 1 at the latest. At the same time, edel has vowed to "significantly" increase its majority holding in Kontor.

The enlarged digital business will create one of the largest content aggregators in Europe, with a total of more than 150,000 titles and more than 500 distribution labels, according to edel in a statement.

Kontor New Media managing director Michael Pohl will assume overall responsibility for the division.

"To strengthen energies you have to pool them," says Michael Haentjes, CEO edel music AG, in a statement. "This merger is a logical step towards efficiency. The company will become even more attractive for our customers through the larger marketshare alone."

Jens Thele, managing partner of Kontor New Media, adds, "This merger is a correct and important step following three extremely successful years in this highly competitive digital market. Our distribution partners will benefit from it in all areas."

As previously reported, Stefan Weikert, who had been responsible for edel's digital business as general manager, will take duties for the company's newly-formed books division.
