Belgian commercial radio network NRJ Belgium and Universal Music Belgium have teamed for a hefty free downloads promotion.

The music major is offering a total of 50,000 downloads through the free-music.be site, which went live Aug. 17. The tie-up will run for six months, according to an NRJ spokesman.

Through the project, a new track will be offered each day, with just 300 downloads made available to the service's 2,100 registered users. Mika's "Love Today" is today's featured song.

Bruno Van Sieleghem, managing director of NRJ Belgium, says the site gets more than 1,500 download attempts each day.

"Its perfectly legal, because we pay for every download," he says. "We found car manufacturer Renault to sponsor the first three months, to promote the launch of their new Twingo model in turn for advertising and visibility on the site. Their marketing campaign perfectly fits the young image of the download generation."

NRJ is promoting the project on its airwaves nationwide.

At press time, there was no comment available from Universal Music.
