Liverpool, the northern English city which was the birthplace of the Beatles, has been chosen to host the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, organizers said today.

The 15th annual event will take place at the 10,600-capacity Echo Arena on Nov. 6, 2008.

It will be the third time the event has been held in Britain, following London in 1996 and Edinburgh in 2003.

Liverpool's turn to host the prestigious gala coincides with the city's induction as the European Capital of Culture 2008.

"It is fantastic to be back in the U.K. and it is only natural that Liverpool should host the fifteenth annual Europe Music Awards," commented Richard Godfrey, senior VP content & music, MTV Networks International and executive producer, in a statement issued this morning. "Not only is it the European Capital of Culture next year but the influence of its rich music heritage is still felt today."

Clothing brand Esprit's edc label has renewed its sponsorship of the 2008 Europe Music Awards.

MTV's flagship 2007 European music awards event will take place tomorrow night in Munich, Germany.
