Sydney-based dance trio Sneaky Sound System has gained six nominations for the Australian independent sector's second AIR awards, due to be held Dec. 10 in Melbourne.

The event is organized by the Australian Independent Record Labels Association and sponsored for the first time this year by German liquor brand Jagermeister. Sneaky Sound System's self titled debut album on Whack Records/MGM is nominated as best-performing independent album after selling 100,000 units, according to its label. Three tracks from the album, "Pictures", "UFO" and "I Love It" received nods in the best performing independent single/EP category.

Sneaky Sound System is also nominated in the independent artist and dance/electronic release categories. It also received five nominations for this year's ARIA awards, and won two at the October 28 event in Sydney.

The act toured Europe and the United Kingdom in September, and drew interest from labels in the U.S. after its appearance on the Sydney end of Live Earth, says manager Amber Zada of Sydney-based Bacon Fat Mamma Management.

A full list of nominees in all eight categories is available at www.air.org.au/awards. Other multi-nominees include blues rockers John Butler Trio (Jarrah/MGM) with four, and hip hop act Hilltop Hoods (Obese) with three.

The pool of nominees and eventual winners is drawn from the weekly V AIR Independent Charts, compiled by AIR, which calculates sales rankings of independent releases by Australian artists.
