Australian industry veteran John Evans today announced his resignation as chairman of Destra Entertainment, with effect from Feb. 8, 2008.

Destra Entertainment - which houses the music and DVD companies of digital content company Destra Corporation - bought Evans's Sydney-based catalog and TV marketing record label company Rajon Music Group in December 2005.

Evans, who entered the Australian music industry in the mid-1960s, plans to concentrate on his 35-year old children's label Patti Biscoe Record and publishing company Big Jo-ke. "My only regret is I can't do it all over again - I absolute love this business," the 63-year old tells Billboard.biz.

Destra Entertainment has not announced a replacement for Evans, but it is thought to be its Sydney-based chief executive officer, Ken Outch.

Evans served 15 years on the Australian Recording Industry Association board. Beginning as a band manager in his hometown Adelaide as a 15-year old, Evans joined RCA Records in the sales team. But he made a niche for himself the 1970s when he pioneered the mid-price catalog and TV concept album markets with JB Records and Castle Communications Australasia, which was a joint venture with Castle Communications U.K. ARIA chairman Denis Handlin called him "a true expert in catalog marketing."

His biggest success story was setting up Rajon Entertainment in 1986: fourteen years later, it became Rajon Music Group when it merged with two other budget labels Redx Entertainment and Startel Entertainment.

It grossed A$20 million annually ($17.7 million), according to Evans, and claimed a 4% - 5% share of the Australian recorded music market. About 30% of Rajon's business came from Asian territories. It was eying an entry into the U.K. market when it was bought by Destra.

"Rajon lifted the bar on how budget titles are packaged, by working the idea that a budget record doesn't have to look, and be marketed, like a budget record," according to John Little, owner and buyer for Carisma Compact Discs in Circular Quay, Sydney.

Evans' final activity for Destra Entertainment is to attend MIDEM this coming January in Cannes. It will be his 40th trip to the annual trade fair.
