British electro newcomers Reverend and the Makers will launch U.K. live music and club venues operator Academy Music Group's new site in Sheffield with a gig on April 11, 2008.

Other performers lined-up to play the new Carling Academy Sheffield include Brit-pop era band James on April 15, British award-winning singer/songwriter KT Tunstall on April 16, and breakthrough alternative rockers the Pigeon Detectives on May 21.

Reverend and the Makers, who also hail from Sheffield, arrived at No. 5 on the U.K. albums chart in September with their debut album, "The State of Things" (Wall of Sound).

"Sheffield is a great City, with not only a fantastic musical history but also a thriving and exciting current scene and the new Academy venue is a great addition to that," comments Matt Wooliscroft, of promoters SJM Concerts, who are shareholders in AMG.

"It's fantastic news that Reverend and the Makers, being such a high profile act, will launch Carling Academy Sheffield in April for a Yorkshire home-coming," he adds.

The Carling Academy Sheffield is one of three new AMG venues due to open in 2008, bringing to 14 the number of live music businesses within the AMG portfolio. As previously reported, new "Carling Academy" branded sites will also roll out in Leeds and Brighton.

The Sheffield venue, on the Arundel Gate premises of the former Roxy nightclub, is currently undergoing a £3 million ($6 million) redevelopment.
